Join us at MSU’s Abrams Planetarium for The Genealogy of Light, an immersive performance by artist Zoe Butler that brings together Caribbean cosmology, folklore, physics, and philosophy in a meditation on Black embodiment. In the planetarium’s expansive surroundings, Butler’s non-linear storytelling invites us to look up, listen closely, and consider the connections between the cosmic and the personal, the seen and the unseen, and the worlds we inherit. 

The Genealogy of Light expands on Butler’s earlier immersive video-performance-lecture Conversations and Constellations, originally presented at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. 

This program accompanies Butler’s work on view in Laas / Absan / Peldía: Caribbean Cinema Cultures (Aug. 22, 2026–Jan. 31, 2027), an exhibition exploring loss, memory, and the evolving meaning of cinema across the Caribbean.
